2010-2011 Workshops

The following workshops are designed so that all participants, from college students to classroom teachers and school administrators to general music teachers, might experience the delights of singing, dancing, moving, and playing! This is hands-on musical learning at its very best. Workshop fees for the 2009-2010 academic year range from $25.00 for members to $50.00 for non-members. A $5.00 workshop fee is available for all full-time college students.

We will make musical connections with children's literature, science, social studeis, art and special school days through the Orff Process. We will have a very full day, so come ready to be actively and creatively involved in comfortable clothes!

"World Music Drumming: Expanding Horizons"

A hands-on drumming / singing / movement session that explores new directions for the internationally successful World music Drumming curriculum now in thousands of schools.u Explore cultures including and beyond WEst Africa and the Caribbean. make connections to current popular music and ancient traditions. The session will include a variety of pieces inclidng Orff xylophones, recorders, and same choral arrangements.

"Appalachian Rhythms: A Two-in-One Experience"

Music and movement blend naturally in the simple children's singing games and more complicated playpaty games of the Appalachian region. Participants will learn several of these historic music and  music activities in this seminar, and discuss the social situaition that gave rise to this particilar form or recreation. Participants will also learn about the Appalachian dulcimer as a folk instrument and have the oportunity to play a tune or two for themselves as the learn in the traditional way- be ear from a master musician!

Directions to UK Singletary Center (park at Student Center, directions below)

From I-64 or I-75, North of Lexington, take broadway Exit (US-68) and go south. Follow the signs to UK, go past downtown, then turn left onto Maxwell Street. After a few blocks, turn right onto Rose Street. Go one block to Euclid Avenue.

From I-75 south of Lexington, take Athens-Boonesborough (Exit 104), and turn left onto Richmond Road. Follow Richmond Road towards downtown. Turn left onto Rose Street. Go a few blocks to Euclid Avenue.

Singletary Center is located at the corner of Rose and Euclid, (also called The Avenue of Champions) between Rose Street and Limestone. Parking is behind the coliseum (enter off Rose Street a little before Euclid) or beside the Student Center (enter off Euclid/Avenue of Champions). Come around to the back of Singletary Center (next to the Fine Arts Building) to find the workshop.
